When: Thursday Evening, August 20th, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Where: South Middle School Auditorium
For : All 6th grade band students and at least one of their parents or an adult guardian.
The first time your student gets their horn out of the case, it needs to be under the supervision of an experienced musician, especially if your student is playing a woodwind instrument. There is a right way and many wrong ways to handle an instrument and if not done properly, it will not play. Nothing could extinguish the excitement of beginning band faster than to be sitting in a class while everyone around you is learning to play their horn, but yours is already in the shop for repair after one weekend at home. We need to take time to show them how and why things are done and then have them demonstrate back, several times, the right way to care for their horn. Each student will also be taught the first note on their instrument necessary to begin class instruction on the following Monday. If we try to do all of this during class time, it will be a week getting to all the kids and that also is frustrating to young players who want to dive in and get busy making music, not sitting around waiting for their 30 seconds of class to see if they are up to speed on horn assembly. Trust me; this is so much better than the old way of doing things. The instruction will be done by a professional musician from our area.
While the kids are off learning all this, I will be in the auditorium with the parents, explaining many things about the program and getting all of you up to speed on finances, chaperoning, concerts and trips, and all things band for the next three years. This to me is just as important as what the kids are doing and I really would like for at least one adult per student to be present for this. I promise to be entertaining, motivating, and concise in my presentation so it won’t be painful to sit through.
If for some reason you have already made plans for this evening in August and can not attend on such short notice, I understand and you and your student will not be penalized in any way for not being here. I can get a few kids caught up more quickly than trying to do 40 at one time. Please make every effort to make it if you can. If you can not stay please make arrangements for your student to come and leave with a trusted parent who also has a child entering the program.
I am very excited to begin this new journey into the next phase of your child’s life. Please join us for this first step into an exciting future in music for your student!
